Loaning Services

Library cards

Who has borrowing privileges?

Students, faculty, administrative staff and retirees of Hebrew University have circulation privileges.
Faculty members of other universities, as well as advanced degrees students are also entitled to circulation privileges.

Academic visitors should bring a letter from the host department for activation of circulation privileges.

Other readers can arrange privileges for a fee.

Opening a library card:

A library card can be opened at the circulation desk Sunday-Thursday 9:00-18:00.

Registered student's library cards are opened automatically.

Hebrew University staff can open a card by presenting their worker's card, pay slip or a letter from their department.

University retirees should present their Hebrew University pensioner card.

Academic faculty and advanced degree students from other universities are asked to bring a guarantee letter from their universities' main library.

Registration should be renewed at the beginning of every year.

I lost my library card. What should I do?

Please inform the circulation desk immediately of any loss or theft of a library card to order to avoid improper use of the card. You can notify us in person or by calling: 02-6584376. After reporting the loss or theft you will receive a temporary card.

Book loans

For how long can I check out a book?

Textbooks marked with yellow and red strips or yellow and orange strips can be used within library premises ONLY.
Textbooks marked with yellow strips - for 3 days.

Research books (not marked) - for 3 weeks.

Reference room series marked with purple and red strips - non-circulating.
Reference room series marked with purple strips - for 3 weeks.

All the other material is non-circulating.

How many books can be checked out simultaneously?

Students, faculty and staff of the Faculty of Science:
  10 textbooks and 20 research books.

Students, faculty and staff of other Hebrew University campuses:
   2 textbooks and 6 research books.

Other readers:
   4 books for 3 weeks.

How can I renew loans?

Loans are renewed automatically by the library, as long as the reader follows all circulation rules and the book was not requested by another reader.

If a book should be requested an email message will be sent to your email account ( @mail.huji.ac.il ).

The fine for returning the book after the date stated in the message, is 10 nis per day.

Inquires at the circulation desk or by phone: 6584376; or by checking your library card online.

When and where should books be returned?

Textbooks should be returned by 17:00.
Research books should be returned half an hour before the library's scheduled closing.

In Harman Science Library return books to the box at the circulation desk during library hours.

I was called to reserve duty and will be unable to return my books on time. What should I do?

We would appreciate it if you could make an effort and return the books on time.
If a fine accumulates during your service, please furnish an official confirmation of your service at the circulation desk.

Book requests

How can I know if a book is on loan?

Go into the all copies screen in the catalog listing of a specific book (How to find a book?), and check if there is a date in the Due date field to the right of the screen. If there is a date the book is on loan and the date that appears is the current due date of the book. If there is no date the book should be in the library.

How do I recall a book currently on loan?

Go into the all copies screen in the catalog listing of the specific book (How to find a book?), select the request option and continue according to the instructions that appear on the screen.
A book can requested only if there are no circulating copies currently in the library. Books cannot be ordered for a specific date.
Requests are filled according to the order in which they were received.

Will I be notified when the book I have requested is available?

When the book you requested arrives you will receive an email notification ( @mail.huji.ac.il ).
Textbooks will be held for one day, research books will be held for one week.
Orders can be checked online. Access your library card in the catalog and select requests ('הזמנות'). A date appearing in the arrival field ('תאריך הגעת הפריט') indicates that your order has arrived. If it hasn't, you can check your place in the queue by clicking the number next to your request.

My book order has arrived, what should I do?

Requested items can be picked up at the circulation desk.
Textbooks will be held for one day, research books will be held for one week.

How can I borrow books from other academic libraries in Israel?

Hebrew University's students, faculty and staff are entitled to circulation privileges at all university libraries and at the National Library free of charge.

Advanced degree students, faculty and staff are entitled to circulation privileges in all other university libraries free of charge upon presentation of a guarantee letter from the Harman Library. Please request the above letter at the library's circulation desk.

Interlibrary Loan - ordering books and articles through the internet

How can I order copies of articles from the Harman Science Library?

Copies of publications from the Harman Science Library collections can be ordered via the interlibrary loan service. Please fill out the request form and a scanned copy will be sent to your email account.
This service is provided for a fee.

How can I order publications from other libraries?

I have a valid Harman Science Library card. How can I order publications from other libraries?

To order a book from an Israeli academic library or an article from Israel or abroad, fill out the online form. Requests should include as many bibliographic details as possible.

Scanned articles will be sent directly to your email account, books need to be picked up in the library.

The service is provided for a fee.

I don't have a valid Harman Science Library card. How can I order publications from other libraries?

The Harman Library's Interlibrary Loan service is unable to place such orders. Please refer to your local Interlibrary Loan department or directly to the library holding the item you're intersted in.

Computers & Internet

How to access electronic journals and databases from home?

Hebrew University students and faculty can also access databases and electronic journals directly from home. Follow the connection instructions available on Computation Authority site.

Are there computers, printers and scanners in the library?

There are computers and a printer on both level 1 and level -1 . The scanner is located on level -1.

A Givat Ram network username and password are needed to use the library computers and the scanner.
Printing can be paid for by using a credit card or by printing card.

The library has a number of laptops available for loaning for use within the library. Details and loaning services are available at the loan desk.

Is a wireless access available?

What other services does the library offer?

Where are the photocopy machines located?

The photocopy machines are located on levels 1 and -1 (the books level).
They are all activated by a credit card or a photocopy card.

Where can photocopy cards be purchased and reloaded?

Photocopy cards can be purchased at the internal post office (דואר פנימי) located in the main administration building at the entrance to the campus, between 8:00-16:00.

Does the library have exams from previous years?

Yes, there is a database of online exams from Faculty of Science courses. The database enables searching for tests from 2000 to the present. It is possible to search by year, course title, course number and by teacher. For direct access follow this link: http://www3.huji.ac.il/cgi-bin/testsearch/testsearch.cgi . Access is also available through the library website.

Exams from previous years are in the Harman library copy room organized by department and course number.

If you cannot find the exam you were looking for, please contact the department secretary.

Does the library have copies of filmed courses?

Yes, the library has HTML movies of old taped courses. A links to the online courses can be found at "Online Video Recording (Hebrew)". The movies are accessible to Hebrew University web users (identification by IP).

Does the library have accompanying discs to textbooks?

Yes. Searching the library's catalog will show which textbooks have accompanying discs.
The discs are available at the circulation desk and can be borrowed for 3 days like a textbook.

Does the library have electronic dictionaries and calculators for loan?

Yes, the library has electronic dictionaries and calculators for loan. The dictionaries can be loaned for 3 days and the calculators for 3 hours. For further details please visit us at the loan desk.
